The 2020 Summer Programs have been cancelled*

Hello Everyone,

My hope is that you are all still safe and well, and that warmer weather has allowed you to get out of the house to stretch your legs and see other people – from an appropriate distance of course!

As of May 21, we have decided to cancel our summer programs. For the past three months we have had daily conversations with our peers in the summer camp world in Massachusetts and across New England. Our team has looked over plans for opening and the reasons for not opening of camps in many other parts of the country as well. We have listened to state and local leaders and representatives from the state department of Public Health, and our local board of health. Throughout this time we have been formulating our own plans about how to safely open the FA Summer Programs. On Monday the 18th of May, Governor Baker released his four phase plan for reopening the state. After careful consideration of the document we feel that we cannot open and run a program of the quality that you have come to expect from us.

This has not been an easy decision. We start planning for camps in September, and spend the next nine months working to ensure that we can have the best program possible. We know that your children look forward to learning new skills, trying a new sport, brushing up on academics, making new friends, and seeing old ones. We know too that you often need us for child care so that you can work or run errands. I worry about my counselors who need their pay for household expenses or to pay for college. There are so many things that factor into this decision. It all comes down to the most important thing, the safety of our campers and their families.

If your children are registered for one of our programs you will receive a full refund, however this will take some time. We will begin processing refunds on June 1, with the goal of completing all refunds by June 30.

Thank you for being a part of the Friends Academy Summer Programs. I’m looking forward to next summer when we can be together again to learn, to create, to cook, to play, to see old friends, and to make new ones.

If you are interested in any summer academic tutoring, and/or specialized Orton-Gillingham tutoring, please reach out to Laura Velazquez at lvelazquez@friendsacademy1810.org. Our Sally Borden Connect Program is available virtually via individual and group tutoring sessions.

As always, if you have questions, please reach out to me.

Thank you, and be well,

*We will still be offering the SSAT Prep program, but it will be in a modified online format. The dates of the course may change as well.

*We will still be offering the Orton-Gillingham Practitioner training courses.

Thank you for your interest in the Friends Academy Summer Program!

Whether your child is a student at Friends Academy or attends school elsewhere, there are many reasons for kids to spend some time with us this summer. Two of the most compelling are the quality of our programs and the safe, family friendly environment that we promote. Whether you’re looking for academics, sports, themed weeks for younger campers, adventure programs for older campers, or a week-long expedition, there is something here for your child. There are opportunities for everyone to have fun, learn new skills, and enhance current talents.

We make this happen in a few ways:

  • Our counselors are highly trained. Most are teachers in their fields.
  • They are energetic and fun loving: this is evident in the experiences they help create for campers.
  • We have a low camper to staff ratio. Counselors get to know campers better, so they can better meet their individual needs.
  • Our programs are designed with specific ages in mind. They cater to the developmental needs of each age group.
  • We keep campers busy with plenty of structure, but allow them opportunities and some choice in their day.

We hope to see you this summer!

Charley Pelissier, Director of External Programs
